Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Raspberries (Rubus idaeus and related species) are sometimes promoted for eye health due to their high content of antioxidants, particularly vitamin C, anthocyanins, and other polyphenols. Scientific studies have established that antioxidants can help protect the eyes from oxidative stress, which is implicated in the development of cataracts, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), and other degenerative eye conditions. The anthocyanins found in raspberries have demonstrated protective effects on retinal cells in animal and in vitro studies, reducing oxidative damage and inflammation—both important factors in ocular health.

However, most of the studies investigating the benefits of berries for eye health have focused on other berries, such as bilberry and blueberry, which contain higher levels of specific anthocyanins linked more directly to eye function. Human clinical trials specifically examining raspberry consumption and eye health are lacking. Thus, while the theoretical antioxidant benefit is plausible, direct scientific validation for raspberries themselves in supporting the eyes is limited.

In summary, while raspberries may contribute to overall antioxidant intake and theoretically support eye health as part of a varied diet, direct evidence specific to raspberries and improvement or protection of eye health in humans is weak. The evidence for their use in this context is therefore rated as low (2/5).
