Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Ginkgo biloba has been studied for its potential benefits in supporting eye health, particularly in relation to conditions involving impaired blood flow to the eyes, such as normal-tension glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Some clinical trials have shown that Ginkgo biloba extract may help improve visual function or slow the progression of visual field loss in patients with glaucoma. The proposed mechanism is related to Ginkgo’s ability to enhance microcirculation and provide antioxidant effects, which could protect retinal and optic nerve cells from oxidative stress and ischemic damage.

However, the quality and consistency of the evidence are mixed. A 2013 Cochrane review concluded that there is some evidence Ginkgo biloba might benefit patients with pre-existing glaucoma, but the studies were small and results were not robust enough to recommend routine use. For macular degeneration, studies have been less conclusive, with limited or inconsistent benefit demonstrated. Ginkgo’s traditional uses in Chinese medicine have generally targeted cognitive function and circulation rather than vision, though improved blood flow is sometimes linked to eye health in holistic practices.

In summary, while there is some scientific evidence supporting the use of Ginkgo for certain eye conditions, especially glaucoma, it is moderate and not definitive. More large-scale, high-quality studies are needed to fully establish its efficacy for eye health.
