Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Fish, particularly fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines, and tuna, is scientifically validated to support eye health due to its rich content of omega-3 fatty acids, especially docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA). DHA is a major structural component of the retina, and adequate levels are crucial for maintaining normal visual function. Multiple epidemiological studies and clinical trials have shown that higher dietary intake of omega-3 fatty acids is associated with a reduced risk of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), one of the leading causes of blindness in older adults. Additionally, omega-3s may help prevent dry eye syndrome by supporting the oily layer of tear film and reducing inflammation. A landmark study, the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS2), investigated the effects of omega-3 supplementation and found some benefit, although results were mixed regarding supplementation versus dietary intake. Overall, the consumption of fish as part of a balanced diet is widely recommended by ophthalmologists and nutritionists for supporting long-term eye health, based on a solid foundation of scientific evidence.
