Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Cornus, particularly Cornus officinalis (commonly known as "Shan Zhu Yu"), has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to support the eyes and vision. In TCM, Cornus is believed to "nourish the liver and kidney," organs that are traditionally linked to healthy eyesight. Herbal formulations containing Cornus are used to address symptoms like blurred vision, dizziness, and eye fatigue, especially when these are believed to be due to deficiencies in liver or kidney energy.

However, while Cornus is widely used in this traditional context, scientific validation for its direct effects on eye health is limited. Some preclinical studies suggest that Cornus extracts possess antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, which could theoretically benefit ocular tissues and prevent degenerative eye changes. Nevertheless, there are currently no large-scale clinical trials or robust scientific evidence demonstrating that Cornus directly improves eyesight or treats eye diseases in humans. Thus, its use for supporting the eyes is justified primarily by tradition rather than rigorous scientific research.
