Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Apricots have traditionally been valued in various cultures for their potential benefits to eye health, particularly because they are a good dietary source of vitamins such as vitamin A (as beta-carotene), which is essential for normal vision. In traditional herbal and food-based medicine systems, consuming apricots has been recommended to "brighten the eyes" or prevent night blindness, a condition linked to vitamin A deficiency. However, while cultural practices have endorsed apricots for supporting eye health, the direct scientific evidence specific to apricots themselves (as opposed to vitamin A or beta-carotene in general) is limited. Most modern research supports the role of vitamin A and carotenoids in maintaining eye health and preventing certain vision disorders, but does not specifically single out apricots over other carotenoid-rich foods. Therefore, the traditional use of apricot for eye health is somewhat supported by the general understanding of nutrition, but robust clinical trials on apricots themselves are lacking.
