Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Artemisia herba-alba, commonly known as white wormwood, has a long history of use in traditional medicine in regions such as North Africa and the Middle East. Traditional healers have used infusions, decoctions, or topical applications of Artemisia herba-alba for a variety of ailments, including eye infections and inflammation. The rationale for its use typically stems from its perceived antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and soothing properties. However, documentation of these practices is mostly anecdotal or based on ethnobotanical surveys, and specific details regarding preparation methods or efficacy are often lacking.

Despite its traditional use, there is little to no robust scientific evidence supporting Artemisia herba-alba for the treatment or support of eye infections. While some laboratory studies have identified antimicrobial activity of Artemisia herba-alba extracts against bacteria and fungi, these studies are generally limited to in vitro experiments and do not specifically address pathogens commonly implicated in ocular infections, nor do they assess safety or efficacy in the context of eye health. No clinical trials or animal studies have directly evaluated its use for eye infections. As such, the evidence for its efficacy in this context is weak and based almost entirely on traditional practices rather than scientific validation.
