Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Glutamine is a non-essential amino acid that has been widely investigated for its potential role in supporting exercise performance and recovery. The rationale for its use stems from the observation that plasma glutamine levels can decrease following prolonged, intense physical activity, leading to speculation that supplementation might benefit athletes. Some studies have examined glutamine’s effects on muscle recovery, immune function, and muscle soreness post-exercise. However, the overall scientific evidence supporting its use for enhancing exercise performance or recovery is limited and mixed.

A number of clinical trials have failed to demonstrate significant improvements in strength, power, or endurance from glutamine supplementation in healthy, well-nourished athletes. Some small studies suggest that glutamine might help reduce exercise-induced immune suppression, but these findings are not consistently replicated. The International Society of Sports Nutrition has stated that there is little evidence supporting glutamine supplementation for strength, power, or muscle mass enhancements in athletes, although it may have a role in clinical populations or during periods of extreme training stress.

In summary, while glutamine has a plausible biological rationale and is commonly used by athletes, robust scientific support for its effectiveness in exercise performance and recovery is lacking, resulting in a moderate-low evidence rating.
