Rating (out of 5): 3

Thai kudzu (Pueraria mirifica) is a plant native to Thailand and Southeast Asia that has been traditionally used for its rejuvenating properties, particularly for women’s health. The plant contains phytoestrogens, especially miroestrol and deoxymiroestrol, which are compounds structurally similar to estradiol, the primary female sex hormone. Several scientific studies have examined the estrogenic effects of Pueraria mirifica extracts. Both in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated that these phytoestrogens can bind to estrogen receptors and exert estrogen-like activity, leading to outcomes such as increased uterine weight and improved vaginal health.

In human studies, small clinical trials have suggested that Pueraria mirifica supplementation may help alleviate menopausal symptoms (such as hot flashes and vaginal dryness) and support bone health in postmenopausal women, indicating an estrogenic effect. However, the number and size of these trials are limited, and long-term safety data is lacking. While the evidence base is not yet robust enough for definitive clinical recommendations, the presence of bioactive phytoestrogens and preliminary human data provide moderate support for the use of Thai kudzu to support the estrogen system. Use should be approached with caution, especially in individuals with hormone-sensitive conditions.
