Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Secoisolariciresinol diglycoside (SDG) is a plant lignan most commonly found in flaxseed. When ingested, SDG is metabolized by intestinal bacteria into enterolignans such as enterodiol and enterolactone, which are classified as phytoestrogens. These compounds have a weak estrogenic or anti-estrogenic effect depending on endogenous estrogen levels. Several animal and in vitro studies have shown that SDG and its metabolites can bind to estrogen receptors and may modulate estrogenic activity in the body. Human studies, while limited, suggest that SDG supplementation can increase circulating levels of enterolignans, and some small clinical trials and observational studies have investigated its impact on hormone-related conditions such as menopausal symptoms, breast cancer risk, and hormonal balance. However, the results are mixed and generally not robust; most human studies are preliminary, have small sample sizes, or are observational in nature. As a result, while there is a scientific rationale and some early evidence supporting SDG's influence on estrogenic pathways, the overall level of scientific validation is moderate to low, and more rigorous, large-scale human trials are needed to confirm its efficacy and safety in supporting the estrogen body system.
