Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Secoisolariciresinol diglycoside (SDG) is a plant lignan primarily found in flaxseeds. When ingested, it is converted by intestinal bacteria into enterolignans (enterodiol and enterolactone), which are phytoestrogens—plant compounds with structural similarity to estrogen. Scientific studies have shown that SDG and its metabolites can bind to estrogen receptors, albeit with much weaker activity compared to endogenous estrogens. This weak estrogenic/anti-estrogenic effect is thought to help balance estrogen activity in the body, which has led to research into SDG’s potential benefits for estrogen-related conditions, such as menopausal symptoms, breast cancer risk, and hormonal balance.

Several animal and human studies suggest that SDG supplementation can modestly influence estrogen metabolism, reduce hot flashes, and alter menstrual cycle parameters. Some epidemiological evidence links higher enterolignan levels with lower risk of hormone-dependent cancers. However, the effects are relatively modest and somewhat inconsistent across studies. The mechanism is primarily attributed to SDG’s ability to modulate estrogen receptor activity and influence estrogen metabolism rather than directly increasing or decreasing estrogen levels.

In summary, there is scientific rationale and some clinical data supporting the use of SDG to support the estrogen system, though the strength of evidence is moderate and not definitive. More well-powered, long-term clinical trials are needed to firmly establish its efficacy for specific estrogen-related conditions.
