Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Rhapontic rhubarb (Rheum rhaponticum) is used primarily for supporting estrogen-related body systems, especially in the context of menopausal symptoms. Scientific evidence, particularly from standardized extracts such as ERr 731®, supports its use in alleviating menopausal symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, and mood disturbances. Several randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trials have demonstrated that ERr 731®, which contains rhaponticin and other stilbenes from Rhapontic rhubarb root, significantly reduces the frequency and severity of menopausal symptoms compared to placebo. The proposed mechanism involves selective estrogen receptor modulation, particularly acting on estrogen receptor beta (ERβ), which may help balance estrogenic activity without the risks associated with traditional hormone replacement therapy. A 12-week double-blind trial published in Menopause (2013) found that rhapontic rhubarb extract significantly improved menopause rating scale scores compared to placebo. Safety profiles in these studies were favorable, with no significant increase in adverse events or endometrial thickness, suggesting minimal estrogenic stimulation of reproductive tissues. While these findings are promising, most of the evidence comes from a limited number of extract formulations and further independent research is needed. Nonetheless, current data provide scientific support for the use of rhapontic rhubarb in the management of menopausal symptoms related to estrogen decline.
