Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Clary sage (Salvia sclarea) has a long history of use in traditional medicine for women's health, particularly for menstrual discomfort and menopausal symptoms. The essential oil is often promoted for its purported ability to support hormonal balance, especially estrogen, due to compounds like sclareol, which is sometimes described as a "phytoestrogen" (a plant-derived substance with estrogen-like activity). However, the actual estrogenic activity of sclareol and clary sage oil in humans is not well established in scientific literature. Most evidence supporting clary sage for estrogen-related concerns comes from anecdotal reports and traditional herbal practices, particularly in European herbalism. A few small studies have explored the effects of clary sage aromatherapy on symptoms like hot flashes or menstrual pain, occasionally reporting modest benefits, but these studies are limited in size and quality, and do not conclusively demonstrate a direct estrogenic effect. Overall, while clary sage has a traditional reputation for supporting female reproductive health, scientific validation for its use specifically in modulating estrogen or supporting the "estrogen body system" is weak and insufficient at this time.
