Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Chinese Chastetree (Vitex negundo) is traditionally used in various Asian medicinal systems, including Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Ayurveda, primarily for its purported effects on reproductive health, including support for menstrual-related concerns. The plant is sometimes used to address symptoms that are thought to be related to hormonal imbalances, such as irregular menstruation or premenstrual syndrome. However, the traditional uses are often generalized to reproductive or "female" health, rather than specifically aiming to modulate estrogen levels or directly support the "Estrogen body system" as understood in modern biomedical terms.

Scientific evidence on Chinese Chastetree’s direct effects on estrogen levels or its action on estrogen receptors is limited and less robust compared to its Mediterranean relative, Vitex agnus-castus (Chasteberry), which has been more extensively studied for PMS and menstrual regulation. Research into Vitex negundo has focused more on its anti-inflammatory, analgesic, and antimicrobial properties. A few animal and in vitro studies suggest potential hormonal effects, but these findings have not been well-substantiated in human clinical trials.

In summary, while Chinese Chastetree is traditionally used for gynecological health, direct scientific validation for its use in supporting the estrogenic system is minimal. Most support for its effects comes from historical and ethnobotanical usage rather than rigorous clinical evidence.
