Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

8-Prenylnaringenin (8-PN) is a phytoestrogen found predominantly in hops (Humulus lupulus) and is recognized as one of the most potent plant-derived estrogens. Its use to support the estrogen body system is primarily justified by scientific evidence, particularly through in vitro and animal studies, as well as limited human research. 8-PN exhibits a high affinity for both estrogen receptor alpha and beta, surpassing many other phytoestrogens in potency. Preclinical studies have demonstrated that 8-PN can mimic the effects of endogenous estrogens, influencing gene expression and cellular responses associated with estrogenic activity.

Human clinical data, although still somewhat limited, indicate that 8-PN may alleviate menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes and night sweats, largely through its interaction with estrogen receptors. Certain randomized controlled trials using hop extracts standardized for 8-PN have reported statistically significant reductions in vasomotor symptoms in menopausal women. However, the totality of evidence is still emerging, and long-term safety studies are sparse.

Traditionally, hops have been used in herbal medicine for women’s health, but direct attribution to 8-PN has only become possible with modern phytochemical analysis. In summary, there is a scientific rationale for the use of 8-Prenylnaringenin in supporting the estrogen body system, supported by mechanistic studies and some human clinical trials, although further research is warranted to fully establish efficacy and safety profiles.
