Evidence supporting the use of: Citrulline nitrate
For the health condition: Erectile Dysfunction
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Citrulline nitrate is a compound combining L-citrulline, an amino acid, with nitrate. L-citrulline itself has been investigated as a supplement for erectile dysfunction (ED) due to its role as a precursor to L-arginine, which can increase nitric oxide (NO) production—a molecule essential for vasodilation and blood flow, including to the penile tissue. Small clinical trials have shown that L-citrulline supplementation (typically 1.5g–3g daily) can modestly improve erectile hardness and satisfaction in men with mild ED, but effects are generally less pronounced than prescription treatments (e.g., PDE5 inhibitors).
Few, if any, clinical studies directly evaluate citrulline nitrate for ED specifically. The addition of nitrate may theoretically enhance NO production further, but safety and efficacy data for this specific compound in the context of ED are lacking. Most evidence comes from L-citrulline alone or from nitrate supplementation separately, not from the nitrate salt of citrulline. Thus, the scientific support for citrulline nitrate in ED is extrapolated, not direct.
In summary, there is some scientific rationale and limited clinical evidence for L-citrulline improving erectile function, but little to no direct evidence for citrulline nitrate itself. The overall evidence is rated low (2/5), reflecting modest results and the lack of direct trials on the nitrate salt form.
