Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Lactobacillus pentosus is a probiotic bacterium found in certain fermented foods and some commercial probiotic formulations. Its use in supporting or treating enteritis (inflammation of the intestine) is backed by a modest amount of scientific evidence, primarily from preclinical studies and a few small-scale clinical trials. Animal studies have suggested that L. pentosus can help modulate gut microbiota, inhibit pathogenic bacteria, and exert anti-inflammatory effects in the intestines. For example, research in murine models has shown that L. pentosus administration can reduce intestinal inflammation and improve gut barrier function in chemically induced colitis.

In humans, limited clinical studies exist. Some small trials and case studies have included L. pentosus as part of multi-strain probiotic mixtures in patients with gastrointestinal disorders, including enteritis and irritable bowel syndrome, with reports of symptomatic improvement. However, the specific contribution of L. pentosus is difficult to isolate in these studies, and there is a lack of large, well-controlled trials focusing exclusively on L. pentosus for enteritis. Regulatory bodies and guidelines (such as those from ESPGHAN and AGA) do not specifically recommend L. pentosus for enteritis due to insufficient high-quality evidence, but the existing preliminary data suggest potential benefits in gut health and inflammation modulation.
