Rhaponticum carthamoides (commonly known as maral root or leuzea) has a long history of traditional use in Russian and Eastern European herbal medicine for enhancing physical and mental energy, combating fatigue, and aiding recovery from strenuous activity. Traditionally, it was used by Siberian peoples and later adopted by Russian athletes and cosmonauts to support stamina and endurance. The root contains a group of compounds called ecdysteroids (notably 20-hydroxyecdysone), which are thought to have adaptogenic properties, potentially helping the body adapt to stress and increase work capacity.
While traditional use is strong, modern scientific evidence remains limited. Some small-scale studies and animal experiments suggest possible benefits in terms of physical performance, anti-fatigue effects, and mental alertness, likely due to ecdysteroids and antioxidant compounds. However, robust clinical trials in humans are lacking, and results are not always consistent or conclusive. Therefore, while its reputation for supporting energy is primarily grounded in tradition and some promising preclinical data, there is not yet solid scientific validation.
