Evidence supporting the use of: Milk
For the health condition: Endurance (lack of)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4
Milk is scientifically validated as a supportive nutritional aid for endurance and athletic performance, though it is not a direct "treatment" for lack of endurance. The evidence for its use is strong, particularly in the context of post-exercise recovery and as a protein and carbohydrate source for athletes. Milk contains high-quality proteins (casein and whey), carbohydrates (lactose), electrolytes (sodium, potassium), and fluids, all of which are crucial for muscle recovery, glycogen replenishment, and rehydration after prolonged exercise. Multiple studies have demonstrated that consuming milk or chocolate milk after endurance exercise improves muscle protein synthesis, reduces markers of muscle damage, and enhances subsequent exercise performance compared to water or some commercial sports drinks. A 2006 study in the International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism found that chocolate milk was as effective, if not more, than commercial recovery beverages for promoting recovery in cyclists. The presence of both fast and slow-digesting proteins in milk helps sustain amino acid delivery to muscles, aiding in repair and adaptation. While milk is not a cure for underlying medical causes of low endurance, its nutritional profile makes it a validated tool for supporting endurance athletes’ recovery and ongoing performance.
