Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Hedyotis diffusa (also known as Oldenlandia diffusa or "Bai Hua She She Cao" in traditional Chinese medicine) is traditionally used in Chinese herbal medicine for its purported anti-inflammatory, detoxifying, and anti-tumor properties. In the context of endometriosis, its use is mainly justified by tradition rather than robust scientific evidence. Traditional Chinese medicine practitioners may include Hedyotis diffusa in herbal formulas aimed at resolving "blood stasis" and reducing inflammation, which are believed to underlie endometriosis symptoms such as pelvic pain and abnormal menstruation.

There are a few preclinical studies suggesting that Hedyotis diffusa exhibits broad anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, and some herbal mixtures containing Hedyotis diffusa have been tested in animal models of gynecological disorders. However, there is a lack of direct clinical trials or high-quality studies specifically evaluating Hedyotis diffusa for endometriosis in humans. Most supporting evidence is anecdotal or comes from traditional practice records and case reports in herbal medicine literature. As such, the current scientific evidence rating for its use in endometriosis is low (2/5), indicating that while there is some rationale based on its general pharmacological activities and long-standing use in traditional medicine, solid scientific validation is lacking.
