Evidence supporting the use of: Astragalus
For the health condition: Emphysema
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Astragalus membranaceus, commonly known as astragalus, is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb that has a long history of use in supporting respiratory health, including conditions such as emphysema. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), astragalus is often prescribed to "tonify Qi" (vital energy), strengthen the lungs, and enhance resistance to illness. Emphysema, a form of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), is said in TCM to be associated with "Lung Qi deficiency," and astragalus is included in many classic herbal formulas aimed at addressing these symptoms.
From a scientific standpoint, while preclinical studies suggest that astragalus may have anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immunomodulatory properties, there is limited direct clinical evidence supporting its effectiveness specifically for emphysema. Most available studies focus on broader COPD populations or animal models, and findings do not definitively establish astragalus as an effective primary treatment. Some small-scale clinical trials and meta-analyses have reported improvements in symptoms and quality of life in COPD patients when astragalus is used as an adjunct to conventional therapies. However, the evidence remains preliminary, and larger, well-designed clinical trials are needed.
In summary, the use of astragalus to support emphysema is primarily based on traditional practices. While there is some emerging preclinical and limited clinical evidence suggesting potential benefits for lung health, the strength of scientific support is modest at present.
