Evidence supporting the use of: German Chamomile
For the health condition: Emotional Sensitivity
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
German Chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) has a long history of traditional use for supporting emotional well-being, particularly for symptoms such as nervousness, irritability, and mild stress. Traditional herbal medicine systems in Europe and beyond have used chamomile preparations—most commonly infusions or teas—to promote relaxation and soothe emotional distress. This use is largely attributed to chamomile's perceived calming effects, which are thought to arise from its aromatic compounds such as apigenin, a flavonoid that may interact with benzodiazepine receptors in the brain.
However, while chamomile is well established in folklore and herbal traditions as a gentle nervine (a plant that supports the nervous system), modern scientific evidence directly supporting its efficacy for "emotional sensitivity" (a broad and somewhat vague term) is limited. Some clinical trials have shown benefits for anxiety and mild sleep disturbances, but these do not specifically address emotional sensitivity as a clinical endpoint. Thus, its use for this purpose is primarily justified by tradition, with only modest supporting evidence from contemporary research for related symptoms like anxiety and mild mood disturbances.
