Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bupleurum, a genus of plants commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has historically been incorporated into herbal formulas aimed at alleviating various conditions, including edema (fluid retention). In TCM, Bupleurum root (known as Chai Hu) is believed to possess properties that help "harmonize" the body, regulate the flow of qi (energy), and support liver and spleen function. Edema, from a TCM perspective, is often attributed to dysfunctions in the spleen and liver, or an imbalance of fluids and qi. As such, Bupleurum is sometimes included in multi-herb prescriptions for edema, typically in combination with other herbs that specifically address water metabolism and diuresis (such as Poria or Alisma). However, its direct effect on edema is not strongly emphasized; Bupleurum is more often considered an adjunctive component that supports broader systemic balance.

From a scientific standpoint, there is limited evidence directly linking Bupleurum to the reduction of edema. Most contemporary research on Bupleurum focuses on its potential anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective, and immunomodulatory properties. There are a few animal studies suggesting possible diuretic or anti-inflammatory effects, but these findings have not been robustly translated into clinical practice or validated in human trials specifically for edema. Therefore, the use of Bupleurum for edema is primarily justified by tradition rather than scientific validation.
