Evidence supporting the use of: Alchemilla
For the health condition: Dysmenorrhea
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Alchemilla, commonly known as lady's mantle, has a long history of traditional use in European herbal medicine for supporting women's reproductive health, particularly in the management of menstrual disorders such as dysmenorrhea (painful menstruation). Historical texts and folk medicine practices describe its use in teas or tinctures to alleviate menstrual cramps, regulate menstrual flow, and support uterine health. The purported beneficial effects are often attributed to its astringent properties, due to the presence of tannins and flavonoids, which are thought to help reduce excessive menstrual bleeding and soothe uterine muscles. However, despite widespread traditional use, clinical scientific evidence specifically validating Alchemilla's efficacy for dysmenorrhea is lacking. Most available information comes from ethnobotanical sources, and modern clinical trials are absent or very limited. Some phytochemical studies suggest that compounds in Alchemilla may have mild anti-inflammatory and antispasmodic effects, but these have not been well-studied in the context of menstrual pain in humans. Thus, while its use is well-supported by tradition, evidence from rigorous scientific research remains sparse, and its efficacy for dysmenorrhea is not conclusively established.
