Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bifidobacterium animalis lactis is a probiotic strain that has been investigated for its potential role in supporting gut health and modulating intestinal inflammation. Regarding diverticulitis, the scientific evidence is limited but not entirely absent. Some small clinical studies and reviews suggest that probiotics, including B. animalis lactis, may help restore the balance of gut microbiota disrupted in diverticular disease and reduce inflammation, which is a key component in diverticulitis. However, most studies do not focus exclusively on B. animalis lactis or on acute diverticulitis, but rather on broader conditions like diverticular disease or chronic symptoms following diverticulitis episodes.

One systematic review (Tursi et al., 2016) found that probiotics could be beneficial in the management of symptomatic uncomplicated diverticular disease, but the results were heterogeneous and the evidence for any specific strain, including B. animalis lactis, was weak. The use of probiotics has been proposed to reduce recurrent episodes and improve symptoms, possibly by modulating the immune response and enhancing mucosal barrier function. However, there is currently a lack of large, high-quality randomized controlled trials specifically supporting B. animalis lactis for treating or preventing diverticulitis.

In summary, the use of B. animalis lactis for diverticulitis has some scientific rationale and preliminary evidence, but it is not robustly supported. The evidence base rates as low to moderate (2 out of 5), and more targeted research is needed to make definitive clinical recommendations.
