Evidence supporting the use of: Tree Turmeric
For the health condition: Dermatitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Tree Turmeric (Berberis aristata), also known as Daruharidra, has a long history of use in Ayurveda and other traditional medicinal systems for a variety of skin conditions, including dermatitis. Traditional texts describe its use in the form of pastes, decoctions, or extracts applied topically or taken internally to reduce itching, inflammation, and other symptoms of skin disorders. The primary active compound, berberine, is credited with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which are believed to help manage skin irritation and infections associated with dermatitis.
While several in vitro and animal studies have shown that berberine and extracts from Berberis species exhibit anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects, direct high-quality clinical evidence supporting its efficacy specifically for dermatitis in humans is limited. Most available data stems from traditional usage and small, preliminary studies, rather than large-scale, placebo-controlled clinical trials. Nevertheless, given its long-standing traditional use and some promising pharmacological data, Tree Turmeric continues to be used in herbal medicine for skin conditions, but scientific validation remains insufficient.
