Evidence supporting the use of: Valerian root
For the health condition: Depression
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Valerian root (Valeriana officinalis) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Europe and Asia, where it has been employed as a remedy for insomnia, anxiety, and nervous restlessness. Its use for depression, however, is less well-established and appears to be more of a secondary or anecdotal application rather than a primary traditional use. The rationale behind valerian's use for depression is often related to its calming effects, which may indirectly benefit mood by improving sleep and reducing anxiety—both of which can contribute to depressive symptoms. However, historical texts and folk medicine sources primarily cite valerian as a sedative and anxiolytic (anxiety-reducing) rather than as an antidepressant.
Scientific evidence supporting valerian root specifically for the treatment of depression is limited and not robust. Most modern research focuses on its effects on sleep and anxiety, with little to no high-quality clinical trial data directly supporting its efficacy in treating depressive disorders. Some animal studies suggest that valerian may influence neurotransmitter systems involved in mood regulation (such as GABA), but human evidence is sparse. As such, while valerian root may have some traditional basis for being used to support mood due to its calming effects, its use for depression is not strongly supported by either tradition or science, and it should not be considered a primary treatment for this condition.
