Salidroside is a bioactive compound found in Rhodiola rosea, a traditional adaptogenic herb used in various cultures, especially in Russia and Scandinavia, to combat fatigue and enhance mental performance. There is emerging scientific interest in salidroside’s potential antidepressant effects. Preclinical studies in animal models have demonstrated that salidroside can reduce depressive-like behaviors, possibly through modulation of neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine, as well as by reducing neuroinflammation and oxidative stress. Some small-scale human studies and clinical trials using Rhodiola rosea extracts (which contain salidroside among other compounds) suggest mild to moderate efficacy in alleviating symptoms of depression, particularly in cases of mild to moderate major depressive disorder.
However, high-quality, large-scale randomized controlled trials specifically investigating isolated salidroside in human depression are lacking. Most clinical studies have focused on the whole plant extract rather than the isolated compound. Therefore, while there is a scientific rationale and some preliminary evidence for the use of salidroside in supporting depression, the overall quality and quantity of clinical data is limited, justifying a moderate evidence rating. Further research is necessary to firmly establish its efficacy and safety for this indication.
