Saffron (Crocus sativus) has a long history of use in traditional medicine, but in recent years, its role in supporting or treating depression has also been explored scientifically. Multiple randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and meta-analyses have found that saffron supplementation can significantly reduce symptoms of mild to moderate depression compared to placebo, and its efficacy appears comparable to standard antidepressant medications such as fluoxetine and imipramine in some studies. The proposed mechanisms of action include modulation of neurotransmitters like serotonin, antioxidant effects, and anti-inflammatory properties.

A 2019 meta-analysis published in "Journal of Integrative Medicine" included several RCTs and concluded that saffron supplementation had a significant positive effect on depressive symptoms. Another systematic review in 2020 found similar results, highlighting the potential of saffron as a natural alternative for managing depression. Most studies used daily doses of 30 mg saffron extract and reported minimal side effects.

However, it should be noted that while the evidence is promising, most trials are of short duration and involve relatively small sample sizes. More research is needed to assess long-term safety and efficacy. Nevertheless, the consistent positive findings across multiple high-quality studies justify a scientific basis for the use of saffron in supporting the treatment of depression.
