Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Bifidobacterium (mixed strains) has been investigated for its potential role in supporting or treating Crohn’s Disease, a type of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The scientific rationale is based on the observed dysbiosis (microbial imbalance) in the gut microbiota of people with Crohn’s Disease and the known anti-inflammatory effects certain probiotics can exert. Several small-scale clinical trials and pilot studies have explored the efficacy of Bifidobacterium-containing probiotics, often in combination with other strains like Lactobacillus, as adjunctive therapy for Crohn’s Disease. However, the results are mixed and generally inconclusive. For example, a systematic review and meta-analysis published in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (2015) concluded that there is insufficient evidence to support the routine use of probiotics, including Bifidobacterium, for maintaining remission or inducing response in Crohn’s Disease. Some individual studies report modest benefits in inflammation markers or symptom relief, but larger, well-controlled trials are lacking. Current clinical guidelines do not recommend Bifidobacterium probiotics as a standard therapy for Crohn’s Disease, though they may be suggested in select cases as adjuncts. Thus, while there is a plausible scientific basis and some limited clinical data, the overall level of evidence is low (rated 2/5), and use should be considered experimental rather than established.
