Evidence supporting the use of: Korean Angelica
For the health condition: Cough (general)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Korean Angelica (Angelica gigas) has a long history of use in traditional Korean and East Asian medicine. While its primary applications are typically for gynecological health, blood circulation, and as a general tonic, some traditional texts and herbal formulations include Angelica species for respiratory complaints such as coughs. The root is sometimes used in multi-herb decoctions intended to "dispel wind-cold" or "moisten the lungs," concepts rooted in traditional East Asian medical theory. However, these uses are based on empirical tradition rather than modern pharmacological evidence.
Scientific studies on Korean Angelica have focused mainly on its anti-inflammatory, anticancer, and neuroprotective properties, rather than its effects on cough or respiratory symptoms. There is a lack of robust clinical or preclinical research directly evaluating its efficacy in treating cough. Therefore, its use for cough is best characterized as traditional, with minimal scientific validation supporting this application.
