Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Cabbage palm refers to several species, most often Sabal palmetto or Livistona australis, and sometimes Raphia vinifera or other palms. Historical and ethnobotanical records indicate traditional use of the cabbage palm in various cultures, particularly among Native American groups in the southeastern United States, for a range of medicinal purposes. Specifically for cough, some records suggest that preparations made from the roots or pith of the cabbage palm were consumed or used in remedies for respiratory complaints, including coughs and colds. However, detailed documentation is limited and the specific preparations, dosages, and efficacy are generally not well described in the literature. There is little to no modern clinical research evaluating the effectiveness of cabbage palm for treating cough, and pharmacological studies on its constituents regarding antitussive activity are lacking. Thus, while there is a basis in tradition for its use against cough, the evidence is anecdotal and not corroborated by rigorous scientific study. As such, it should be considered a traditional remedy with weak supporting evidence.
