Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Sage-leaf alangium (Alangium salviifolium) has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially within Ayurveda and other South Asian folk remedies. The roots, bark, and leaves have been used to manage a variety of ailments, including respiratory issues such as dry coughs. Traditional Ayurvedic texts and ethnobotanical surveys cite the use of decoctions or infusions of the plant material for their expectorant and soothing properties. The plant is believed to help relieve cough due to its demulcent effects, which may soothe irritation of the throat and airways.

However, despite the documented traditional use, there is limited modern scientific research to validate these claims. Only a few pharmacological studies have explored the bioactive compounds in Alangium salviifolium, and while some extracts have demonstrated antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activity in vitro, direct evidence for efficacy against dry cough or specific antitussive properties in clinical settings is lacking. As such, support for the use of Sage-leaf alangium in treating dry cough is primarily based on traditional knowledge rather than robust scientific validation.
