Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Loranthus, specifically Loranthus parasiticus (also known as mistletoe in some traditional Asian medicines), has a history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and other herbal systems. In TCM, it is recognized primarily for its ability to "dispel wind-dampness," "strengthen sinews and bones," and "calm the fetus." However, its direct application for "cough (damp)" is less prominent compared to its use in musculoskeletal or gynecological conditions. Some formulations that address cough and phlegm might include Loranthus as part of a multi-herb blend, particularly if the cough is associated with underlying dampness obstructing the lungs, but this is relatively uncommon and not a primary indication. The connection to cough is usually indirect, based on traditional theory rather than targeted clinical evidence. Scientific research on Loranthus for treating cough, especially cough due to dampness, is very limited, and there are no high-quality clinical trials supporting its efficacy for this indication. Most available studies focus on its anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, or anti-tumor effects, not on respiratory conditions. Thus, while there is some traditional use, the evidence base is weak.
