Evidence supporting the use of: Citrus spp.
For the health condition: Conjunctivitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Citrus species (Citrus spp.), which include oranges, lemons, limes, and related fruits, have a long-standing role in traditional medicine systems across the world. In the context of conjunctivitis (also known as pink eye), historical ethnobotanical sources and folk remedies from several cultures mention the topical or oral use of citrus preparations, such as lemon juice or extracts, to alleviate eye redness or infection. This practice is generally based on the presumed antimicrobial and astringent properties of citrus fruits and their juices. However, there is a lack of rigorous clinical or laboratory studies supporting the efficacy or safety of Citrus spp. for the treatment or support of conjunctivitis. Furthermore, the acidity and irritant potential of citrus juice pose risks of further eye irritation or damage. Modern medical guidance does not recommend citrus extracts or juices for conjunctivitis, and their use remains rooted in tradition rather than scientific validation. Thus, while there is historical precedent for the use of citrus in this context, the evidence is weak, and such practices are not supported by contemporary clinical research.
