Rating (out of 5): 3

Taurine is an amino sulfonic acid that has been researched for its potential benefits in cardiovascular health, including congestive heart failure (CHF). Several clinical studies and animal experiments have suggested that taurine may have beneficial effects in CHF due to its roles in modulating calcium handling in cardiac muscle, anti-oxidant properties, and membrane stabilization. Small randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and open-label studies from Japan and other countries have reported improvements in exercise capacity, left ventricular function, and symptoms of heart failure in patients supplemented with taurine (typically 2-6 grams per day). The proposed mechanisms include reduction of sympathetic overactivity, anti-arrhythmic effects, and improvement of myocardial contractility.

However, most of the clinical evidence comes from relatively small studies with modest sample sizes and short durations. Meta-analyses and systematic reviews acknowledge potential benefits but emphasize that larger, high-quality trials are needed to confirm efficacy and safety. Taurine supplementation is generally well-tolerated, but it is not currently part of standard CHF therapy guidelines. In conclusion, while there is scientific evidence supporting taurine’s use in CHF, it is not robust and should be considered preliminary. Taurine is not a replacement for established heart failure treatments, but may be of adjunctive benefit in some cases under medical supervision.
