Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Chinese Silkvine (Periploca sepium) has a history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), where it is known as "Xiang Jia Pi." Traditionally, it has been used for a variety of purposes, including the treatment of rheumatism, pain, and edema. Its use in supporting the heart or treating symptoms related to congestive heart failure (CHF) is based on TCM principles, particularly for dispelling wind-dampness and promoting water metabolism, which may alleviate fluid retention—one of the symptoms of CHF. However, there is a lack of robust scientific studies or clinical trials in the biomedical literature that specifically validate its efficacy or safety for congestive heart failure. The evidence supporting its use is thus rooted in traditional practice rather than modern scientific validation. The limited available research focuses more on its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, with very little direct investigation into cardiac function or heart failure. As such, while Chinese Silkvine may be mentioned in the context of heart-related symptoms within TCM, it should not be considered an evidence-based treatment for congestive heart failure by current medical standards.
