Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vietnamese sophora (Sophora flavescens, known as "Khổ sâm" in Vietnamese) has a long history of use in traditional medicine throughout East Asia, including Vietnam and China. In traditional medicine systems, it is employed primarily for its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anti-allergic properties. While not a primary herb for sinus congestion, it is sometimes included in multi-herb formulas intended to "clear heat," "eliminate toxins," or "expel wind," which are traditional concepts that may correspond to the reduction of inflammation and infection, including within the respiratory tract and sinuses.

There is some ethnobotanical documentation and traditional literature that mention the use of Sophora flavescens for sinus-related issues, mainly when these are associated with infection, swelling, or allergic reactions. However, scientific studies directly examining its effect on sinus congestion specifically are lacking. Most modern research focuses on its antibacterial, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory actions in vitro or in animal models, and its effects on conditions such as dermatitis, hepatitis, or certain cancers. Thus, the use of Vietnamese sophora for sinus congestion is justified by traditional practice rather than robust clinical or pharmacological evidence. The evidence rating is low (2) due to the absence of direct scientific validation for this particular indication.
