Green onion (Allium fistulosum), also known as scallion, has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, particularly in East Asia. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), green onions are commonly used to help alleviate symptoms of the common cold, including nasal and sinus congestion. TCM practitioners believe that green onion helps "dispel wind-cold" and promote sweating, which is thought to relieve congestion and expel pathogens from the body. Remedies often involve decoctions or poultices made from the fresh plant. However, the scientific evidence supporting the effectiveness of green onion for treating sinus congestion is quite limited. While green onions contain some sulfur compounds (similar to garlic and other alliums) that have mild antimicrobial properties, there are no well-conducted clinical trials specifically demonstrating that green onion is effective in reducing sinus congestion in humans. Most of the support for this use comes from anecdotal reports and centuries of traditional practice rather than modern scientific validation. In summary, green onion’s use for congestion is primarily rooted in tradition, especially within TCM, with little direct scientific evidence to support its efficacy for this particular condition.
