Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Echinacea angustifolia has a long history of traditional use by Native American tribes for a variety of ailments, including conditions associated with congestion and lymphatic issues. Historically, it was used as a remedy for infections, swelling, and to "clean the blood," which is interpreted by modern herbalists as relating to the lymphatic system. Various 19th and early 20th-century eclectic physicians in North America also used Echinacea for ailments involving the lymphatic system, such as swollen glands and tonsillitis, which often present with congestion. However, scientific research on Echinacea angustifolia has primarily focused on its potential immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory properties, especially regarding upper respiratory tract infections like the common cold, not specifically lymphatic congestion. Modern clinical studies do not robustly support its efficacy for lymphatic congestion, and there is a lack of controlled trials specifically investigating its effects on the lymphatic system. Thus, its use for lymphatic congestion is supported mainly by traditional and historical use, rather than by strong scientific evidence.
