For the health condition: Congestion
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
White Nettle (Lamium album), also known as dead-nettle, has a long history of use in European herbal medicine, particularly for respiratory conditions such as congestion, coughs, and catarrh. Traditional herbal texts and folk medicine sources cite the use of white nettle infusions and teas to help soothe the respiratory tract and promote the expectoration of mucus. The plant contains flavonoids, tannins, and mucilage, which have demulcent (soothing) and mild astringent properties that were thought to help with inflamed mucous membranes. However, there is a lack of robust modern scientific studies specifically evaluating white nettle's effectiveness for relieving congestion. Most evidence supporting its use is anecdotal or based on historical herbal practices rather than clinical trials. A few phytochemical studies have identified potentially relevant compounds, but their pharmacological effects on respiratory congestion have not been directly tested in humans. In summary, white nettle's use for congestion is supported primarily by traditional herbal medicine, with very limited scientific validation. The evidence is modest and mainly historical rather than evidence-based.
