Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Taraxacum mongolicum, commonly known as Mongolian dandelion, has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and other Asian medical systems. It is traditionally used for "clearing heat," "removing toxins," and "reducing swelling," which can be interpreted as supporting the body during conditions involving inflammation and congestion, particularly in the respiratory tract. In TCM, it may be included in formulations for coughs, sore throat, and chest congestion. However, while there are some modern pharmacological studies indicating that Taraxacum mongolicum exhibits anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties, direct scientific studies on its efficacy specifically for treating or relieving respiratory congestion in humans are very limited or absent. Most of the contemporary evidence stems from in vitro or animal studies, and not from well-conducted clinical trials in humans targeting congestion. Thus, while traditional use is well documented and there is some low-level pharmacological support, robust scientific validation is lacking at this time.
