Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Aster tataricus, known as Ziwan in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), has a long history of use for treating respiratory conditions, especially those involving congestion, cough, and phlegm. In TCM, the root of Aster tataricus is considered an important herb for "transforming phlegm" and "relieving cough," often included in polyherbal formulas for bronchitis, productive cough, and other respiratory ailments characterized by excess mucus. Historical texts such as the "Shennong Bencao Jing" mention its use for clearing the lungs and alleviating congestion. Modern pharmacological studies provide limited, primarily preclinical, evidence for its expectorant and anti-inflammatory effects. Some in vitro and animal research suggests that extracts of Aster tataricus may promote mucus clearance and reduce airway inflammation, but robust clinical trials in humans are lacking. Therefore, while its use for congestion is well supported by traditional practice, scientific validation remains preliminary and insufficient for strong clinical recommendations. The current evidence rating reflects the strength of historical use and weak early scientific support.
