Lactococcus lactis is a probiotic bacterium commonly used in the dairy industry, but it has also been studied for its potential therapeutic effects on inflammatory bowel diseases such as colitis. Scientific validation for its use in colitis primarily comes from preclinical studies, particularly in animal models. Several studies have demonstrated that oral administration of genetically engineered Lactococcus lactis strains, especially those expressing anti-inflammatory cytokines like IL-10, can reduce inflammation and improve clinical symptoms in models of colitis (e.g., DSS-induced and TNBS-induced colitis in mice). The proposed mechanisms include modulation of the immune response, enhancement of intestinal barrier function, and the production of beneficial metabolites that help restore a healthy gut microbiota balance.

While these findings are promising, there are relatively few rigorous human clinical trials directly supporting the use of wild-type L. lactis as a treatment for colitis. Most human studies have focused on related lactic acid bacteria or on genetically modified strains, rather than the naturally occurring forms. However, the strong preclinical evidence and the safety profile of L. lactis have led to continued interest in its potential as a probiotic therapy for inflammatory bowel diseases.
