Evidence supporting the use of: Alder Buckthorn
For the health condition: Colitis
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Alder Buckthorn (Frangula alnus) has been used traditionally as a herbal remedy, primarily for its laxative properties. Its bark contains anthraquinone glycosides, which have a stimulant effect on the colon and are often employed in the short-term treatment of constipation. The use of Alder Buckthorn for colitis, however, is not well-supported by scientific evidence. In historical and folk medicine traditions, some herbalists have recommended its use to "cleanse" the bowels or support digestive health, which may have led to its occasional application in cases of colitis. However, this use is based more on the general purgative action of the herb rather than any targeted anti-inflammatory or disease-modifying effects relevant to colitis.
Scientific studies specifically examining Alder Buckthorn in the context of colitis or inflammatory bowel diseases are lacking. In fact, because anthraquinone-containing laxatives can irritate the colon lining, their use in active colitis is often contraindicated in modern herbal and medical texts. Thus, while there is a traditional precedent for its use in digestive complaints, there is little to no direct evidence or modern endorsement for using Alder Buckthorn to treat or support colitis, and its irritant properties may make it unsuitable for this condition.
