Evidence supporting the use of: Thyroid substance
For the health condition: Cold Hands and Feet
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Thyroid substance, typically derived from desiccated animal thyroid glands, has a scientific rationale for use in managing cold hands and feet, specifically when these symptoms are related to hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism, a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone, often leads to a slower metabolism, resulting in symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, and intolerance to cold—including cold extremities. Thyroid hormones play a crucial role in regulating basal metabolic rate and peripheral circulation. When deficient, as seen in hypothyroid patients, decreased blood flow to the extremities is common, manifesting as cold hands and feet.
The use of thyroid hormone replacement (including thyroid substance or synthetic forms like levothyroxine) is well-validated in the treatment of hypothyroidism. Multiple clinical guidelines and studies confirm that thyroid hormone therapy can alleviate the systemic symptoms of hypothyroidism, including improving peripheral circulation and reducing cold intolerance. However, it is important to note that thyroid substance is not indicated for cold hands and feet in individuals with normal thyroid function; its use is justified only in those with diagnosed hypothyroidism. In euthyroid individuals, cold extremities are much more likely due to other causes (such as Raynaud's phenomenon) and will not benefit from thyroid supplementation.
Thus, while there is scientific evidence supporting thyroid substance for cold hands and feet secondary to hypothyroidism, its use for this symptom in the general population is not evidence-based and could be harmful if misapplied.
