Evidence supporting the use of: Apple
For the body system: Circulatory System
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Apples have scientific backing for their role in supporting the circulatory system, largely due to their rich content of dietary fiber, polyphenols (including flavonoids), and vitamin C. Multiple epidemiological studies have associated higher apple consumption with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease. For example, a study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition (2013) found that regular apple intake was linked to lower blood pressure and reduced risk of stroke. The beneficial effects are attributed to apples’ soluble fiber (mainly pectin), which can lower blood cholesterol levels, and to their polyphenols, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. These compounds may improve endothelial function and reduce oxidative stress, both of which are important for cardiovascular health.
Randomized controlled trials have provided modest but consistent evidence that consuming apples or apple products can lower LDL cholesterol and improve markers of vascular health. However, the effect size is generally small, and apples should be viewed as part of a healthy, plant-rich diet rather than a standalone treatment. Overall, while apples have a long history as a health-promoting food in many cultures, contemporary use to support the circulatory system is primarily justified by scientific studies showing their beneficial effects on cardiovascular risk factors.
