Arginine alpha-ketoglutarate (AAKG) is a salt of the amino acid L-arginine and alpha-ketoglutaric acid. Its use to support or treat poor circulation is primarily based on the role of L-arginine as a precursor for nitric oxide (NO) synthesis. Nitric oxide is a vasodilator, meaning it helps relax and widen blood vessels, thereby potentially improving blood flow. Several studies have shown that L-arginine supplementation can increase nitric oxide levels and, in certain populations, improve endothelial function and vasodilation, particularly in individuals with endothelial dysfunction or cardiovascular risk factors. However, evidence specifically regarding AAKG (as opposed to L-arginine alone) is limited; most research on circulation and blood flow has focused on L-arginine itself. Some small-scale clinical trials and experimental studies suggest modest improvements in circulation-related parameters (such as blood flow and vascular conductance) with L-arginine supplementation. Systematic reviews, however, indicate that the overall effect is inconsistent, and benefits are usually modest and not universally observed, especially in healthy individuals. There is little high-quality, direct clinical evidence supporting the use of AAKG for poor circulation, and most claims are extrapolated from the effects of L-arginine. Thus, while there is a scientific rationale for its use based on known mechanisms, the clinical evidence is limited and not robust, warranting a low-to-moderate evidence rating.
