Hygrophila, particularly Hygrophila auriculata (also known as Kokilaksha in Ayurvedic medicine), has been traditionally used in various systems of medicine, especially Ayurveda and Unani, for its purported benefits in respiratory conditions. Historical texts and ethnobotanical records indicate its use as an expectorant, diuretic, and general tonic, and it is sometimes included in formulations intended for respiratory health. However, the direct use of Hygrophila specifically for Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder (COPD) is not robustly documented in traditional medicine, and its inclusion is more often based on its general respiratory support properties or its ability to manage symptoms like cough and inflammation. From a scientific perspective, there is very limited evidence directly evaluating Hygrophila for COPD. Some preclinical studies suggest anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects, which could theoretically be beneficial in respiratory diseases characterized by chronic inflammation, such as COPD.
