Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Arani (Premna serratifolia), also known as "Agnimantha" in Ayurveda, is traditionally used in Indian medicine for various ailments, including fever and chills. Its use is rooted in classical Ayurvedic texts such as the Charaka Samhita, where Arani is described as a component of formulations intended to manage conditions characterized by fever (jwara), which often presents with chills (sheeta). The herb is believed to have properties that balance the body's doshas and promote warmth, potentially countering the sensation of chills. However, while there is a strong tradition of its use for such symptoms, current scientific studies on Arani's efficacy specifically for chills are limited. Some pharmacological research has shown that Premna serratifolia possesses antipyretic (fever-reducing) and anti-inflammatory activities in animal models, which might indirectly support its traditional use for febrile illnesses with chills. Nevertheless, direct clinical trials or robust scientific validation for its use specifically against chills in humans are lacking. Therefore, the evidence remains primarily traditional, with limited supportive pharmacological data but no high-quality clinical trials.
