Evidence supporting the use of: Bifidobacterium longum
For the health condition: Chemotherapy (reducing side effects)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3
Bifidobacterium longum has garnered scientific interest for its potential to mitigate chemotherapy-induced side effects, particularly gastrointestinal toxicity. Chemotherapy commonly disrupts gut microbiota, leading to diarrhea, mucositis, and increased risk of infections. Several preclinical studies and a growing number of clinical trials suggest that supplementation with B. longum may help restore microbial balance and strengthen the gut barrier during chemotherapy.
Mechanistically, B. longum appears to exert anti-inflammatory effects, enhance mucosal immunity, and promote the production of short-chain fatty acids, which support intestinal integrity. Some clinical studies have reported reduced incidence and severity of diarrhea and mucositis in cancer patients receiving probiotics containing B. longum, compared to placebo. For example, a 2021 randomized controlled trial in patients undergoing colorectal cancer surgery found that a B. longum-containing probiotic blend led to improved gut microbiota composition and reduced postoperative infection rates.
However, while these results are promising, the evidence is not yet robust or consistent across all studies. Variability in probiotic formulations, cancer types, and chemotherapy regimens makes direct comparisons difficult. Larger, high-quality clinical trials are needed to confirm optimal strains, dosages, and treatment protocols. Overall, current data provide moderate scientific support for the use of B. longum in reducing certain chemotherapy side effects, but probiotics should be used under medical supervision in immunocompromised patients.
